"Flip or Flop" star Tarek El Moussa suffered from drinking and anger issues because of which he had checked into a rehab before filing for divorce from his estranged wife Christina El Moussa, a new report claimed Wednesday. The news comes just days after the two appeared separately on different talk shows to open up about their divorce.

“He drank and was verbally abusive to Christina, so he needed to take care of his issues,” a source told In Touch Weekly. “Christina said he needed to get his temper under control.”

Tarek's rehab came after he and Christina got into a nasty fight in May that forced the police to come to their doorstep, the report said. Many believed that the duo split because of the incident, but the former couple called it a "misunderstanding."

According to In Touch Weekly, another source who witnessed a fight between Tarek and Christina claimed that the two fought over a $40,000 bill for expenses related to “a rehab facility” that Tarek received last summer.

After returning to work, Tarek told people on the HGTV show's set that “I don’t drink anymore,” “I’m happy Tarek now” and “I’m a new man.”

The source close to the incident also said: “The rehab definitely brought him back to life,” and “Christina said he did it to try to win her back, to show her that he was changing... but at that point, she was already done with him.”

Both Christina and Tarek have not responded to questions from In Touch Weekly regarding the rehab stint.

Last week, Tarek spoke about his relationship with Christina with whom he continues to work on their popular show. Despite the two not sharing details about their personal lives they are still "great friends," Tarek told Entertainment Tonight.

The father of two also addressed Christina's split from her boyfriend Gary Anderson, saying that his estranged wife's romance with the HGTV contractor was hard for him.

"I found out from the internet, you know? I do not ask personal questions," Tarek told ET's Nischelle Turner about the news of the breakup. "I do not want to get involved. The best thing for me is to focus on myself, and not worry what she is doing. So, the only reason I found out about the split is because it came out in the media."

Addressing Christina as a "great mom," Tarek hinted at a possibility of them getting back together again.

"Maybe, like, 10 years from now," Tarek said. "Honestly, it took a lot of work to get to a good place for both of us, that I think we are at the point where we aren't looking back, we are looking towards our future."

"I don't know where the future is going to take me, but you never know," he said, adding that Christina was his "soul mate."
