Seafood lovers may want to check out their freezers for frozen cooked shrimp they may have purchased within the last six months. Avanti Frozen Foods Pvt. Ltd has issued a recall on its frozen food products because of possible salmonella contamination.

Avanti Frozen Foods is recalling a variety of its frozen cooked, deveined and peeled shrimp packaged under various brands that were sold nationwide between late December 2020 to late February 2021.

A list of the affected products, including the codes and expiration dates, are also available on the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) website. The brands the contaminated products were sold under include, Censea 2 LB unit size, Chicken of the Sea 16 oz unit size, Honest Catch 1 LB unit size, CWNO 7 LB unit size, Waterfront Bistro 16 oz unit size, Hannaford 1 LB unit size, Open Acres 1 LB unit size, 365 2 LB unit size, and Meijer 1 LB unit size.

Healthy people infected with salmonella could experience diarrhea, vomiting, fever, abdominal pain, and nausea. Salmonella can also cause serious illness in those with weakened immune systems, small children, and frail or elderly people.

The salmonella contamination was first discovered by the FDA from its previous testing of frozen cooked shrimp imported by Avanti Frozen Foods.

The company has already destroyed a shipment of the product that was contaminated and has taken preventative steps to avoid future contamination.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which also monitors foodborne illnesses, issued a food safety alert, revealing two people in Arizona and four people in Nevada have reported getting sick after eating the now recalled shrimp from Avanti Frozen Foods.

Customers who are in possession of the contaminated frozen cooked shrimp are encouraged to return it to its place of purchase for a full refund.
