  • Cassie Laundrie said she hasn't seen her brother Brian Laundrie since he returned to Florida alone on Sept. 1
  • The Laundrie family lawyer said Cassie saw her brother twice after his return, including on the family's camping trip
  • The lawyer blamed a miscommunication for the apparently conflicting statements

Brian Laundrie's sister went on a camping trip with her family, despite claiming she hasn't seen the missing man since he returned to Florida alone.

In an interview with ABC's "Good Morning America" published Sept. 17, Cassie Laundrie said that the last time she spoke to her now-fugitive brother was on Sept. 1 when he returned to his parents' home in North Port without Gabby Petito, who has since been found dead. Brian is wanted on charges of bank card fraud and named a person of interest in the death of Petito but has not yet been charged in connection to his 22-year-old fiancée's murder.

However, Steven Bertolino, the Laundrie family's attorney, confirmed that Cassie saw her brother twice after his return – including on the family's camping trip to Fort De Soto in Pinellas County, Florida.

"Cassie saw her brother Brian on Sept. 1 when he stopped by her home and again on Sept. 6 at Fort De Soto Park," Bertolino told the WFLA.

The lawyer added that authorities are aware that Cassie had seen her brother and blamed misinterpretation for what was said in the interview.

"Law enforcement agencies are well aware of these dates," Bertolino said. "Any prior communication by Cassie that does not reflect these dates is simply a difference of relating an answer to a question misinterpreted by Cassie or poorly posed by the inquirer."

On Aug. 24, Brian's mother, Roberta Laundrie, made reservations for two people to camp at Fort De Soto Park Campground between Sept. 1 to 3 but canceled those reservations on Aug. 31, Fox News reported, citing documents it obtained.

On Sept. 3, Roberta made a new reservation for three people to camp between Sept. 6 to 8. The Laundrie family checked in to the campground on Sept. 6 and checked out on Sept. 8, according to other documents obtained by the outlet.

Their lawyer previously confirmed that the family camped from Sept. 6 until Sept. 7 and "they all left the park," WFLA reported.

During her interview with "Good Morning America," Cassie also said she is now unable to talk to Brian.

"I wish I could talk to him," she said. "I've cooperated every way that I can. I wish I had information where I would give more. This is all that I have…that I gave to police."

Cassie was the first, and so far only, member of the family to publicly discuss Petito since she disappeared in late August and was officially reported missing by family members on Sept. 11. The last time Petito's mother spoke to her by phone was on Aug. 25.

Petito’s remains were found in Bridger–Teton National Forest in Wyoming on Sept. 19. Her death was ruled a homicide, the Washington Post reported.

Brian's parents reported him missing on Sept. 17. They told police they hadn't seen him since Sept. 14.

A week after Brian was reported missing, the FBI issued a warrant of arrest for the 23-year-old man on charges of debit card fraud for allegedly using a Capital One Bank card and someone's personal identification number to make unauthorized withdrawals.
