KEY POINTS

  • A federal arrest warrant was issued against Brian Laundrie on Sept. 22
  • Petito's parents claimed in an interview they believe Laundrie is still alive
  • Laundrie's sister Cassie also recently opened about her brother's disappearance

As the media focus continues to be on the Gabby Petito homicide case, Brian Laundrie's neighbors are allegedly profiting by charging as much as $3,500 per week from reporters by allowing them in their yards.

The police recently barred media from parking outside Laundrie's home. However, Laundrie's neighbors are helping the media with tents to shield them from the weather, providing them with internet access, chairs, water and, of course, bathrooms, TMZ reported.

Reporters have set up their cameras in several yards and driveways on the Laundries' block to track the family's movement.

The Petito case received nationwide attention after the YouTuber's remains were found in a national forest in Wyoming on Sept. 19, nearly three weeks after Laundrie returned to his parents’ home in Florida alone on Sept. 1. The search for Petito's fiancé entered its third week with no concrete clues as to his whereabouts.

The federal arrest warrant was issued against Laundrie on Sept. 22, but he has not been charged in Petito's death. However, he is the only one named as a person of interest in the case.

Over the weekend, a hiker told authorities he believes he saw Laundrie near the Appalachian Trail. However, the 23-year-old has still not been found.

Meanwhile, Petito's parents claimed in an interview they believe Laundrie is still alive. Joe Petito and Nichole Schmidt, Gabby’s mother and father, and her nearly lifelong stepparents, Tara Petito and Jim Schmidt, sat down for an interview with Dr. Phil McGraw that aired Tuesday on his show. They spoke out about the tragic time when they learnt about the 22-year-old's death.

Laundrie's sister Cassie also recently opened up about her brother's disappearance, saying she doesn't know if her parents are involved in any way in the case. "We are just as upset, frustrated and heartbroken as everyone else," Cassie said.

On Tuesday, the Laundrie family attorney said his parents now believe they last saw him Sept. 13, a day earlier than they had previously told investigators.

“The Laundries were basing the date Brian left on their recollection of certain events,” their lawyer, Steven Bertolino, told NewsNation. “Upon further communication with the FBI and confirmation of the Mustang being at the Laundrie residence on Wednesday Sept. 15, we now believe the day Brian left to hike in the preserve was Monday Sept. 13."

“Brian flew home to Tampa from SLC on 08/17 and returned to SLC on 08/23 to rejoin Gabby,” Bertolino said in a series of texts to the media outlet. “To my knowledge Brian and Gabby paid for the flights as they were sharing expenses. Brian flew home to obtain some items and empty and close the storage unit to save money as they contemplated extending the road trip.”
