Catelyn Stark
“Game of Thrones” fans still believe that Catelyn Stark (Michelle Fairley) will reappear in the Season 6 finale. HBO

This is one “Game of Thrones” rumor that just won’t die ... much like the character that it’s about!

The return of Catelyn Stark (Michelle Fairley) is something that has been speculated about ever since she was killed during the Red Wedding. She has yet to appear on screen, and the TV show has already moved past all of author George R.R. Martin’s books. However, fans aren’t giving up hope on the arrival of Lady Stoneheart.

Season 6 brought about a lot of changes for the Stark family. Jon Snow (Kit Harington) was resurrected and able to reunite with his half sister, Sansa (Sophie Turner), before heading to war to reclaim Winterfell from Ramsay Bolton (Iwan Rheon). Jon Snow and Sansa managed to take back their family home, but lost their youngest brother, Rickon (Art Parkinson), in the process.

Meanwhile, Bran resurfaced with the Three-Eyed Raven after taking a season off. It’s not exactly clear where he is now, but he’s under the protection of Benjen Stark (Joseph Mawle) after being forced to run from the Night’s King. Finally, Arya (Maisie Williams) is on her way to Winterfell to reunite with her siblings after leaving the Faceless Men in Braavos.

Does any of this hint at the return of the Stark matriarch? There are certainly some interesting theories going around:

Edmure Tully

Remember Edmure Tully (Tobias Menzies)? Catelyn Stark’s brother was married to Roslin Frey (Alexandra Dowling) before the Red Wedding. After Catelyn and Robb Stark (Richard Madden) were killed, Edmure was made a prisoner of House Frey. His return a couple of weeks ago brought up Catelyn, causing some to speculate that the show was trying to drop a clue about Lady Stoneheart.

The Return of Arya’s Direwolf

Direwolves have been just as important as dragons in “Game of Thrones.” Rickon and Bran’s direwolves were recently killed, leaving Jon Snow’s as the only remaining Stark direwolf. But fans can’t forget about Arya’s direwolf, Nymeria! She’s been missing ever since Season 1 when Arya sent her away to avoid being killed. Now that Arya is on her way back to Winterfell, it’s a possibility that she might run into her long-lost pet. This would play into the Lady Stoneheart storyline because in Martin's books it’s Nymeria who pulls Catelyn’s body from the Green Fork.

The Brotherhood Without Banners

The brotherhood without banners and their leader, Lord Beric Dondarrion (Richard Dormer), were recently reintroduced in “Game of Thrones.” Lord Beric is continually brought back to life by powers from the Lord of Light, and uses those powers in the books to give his life to Catelyn. If Lord Beric is still alive on the show, then there is still a chance he could resurrect Catelyn.

Revenge

A preview for episode 10 reveals that Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) will be sitting down with the Freys. Since Lady Stoneheart wants revenge in the books, the perfect way to introduce her character on screen would be to have her slay the Freys.
