KEY POINTS

  • EXO's Kai, Jeon Somi, R&B singer Zion T. and rookie girl group Lapillus will also attend KAMP 2022
  • The music festival will  be held at Rose Bowl stadium on Oct. 15 and 16
  • More K-pop artists are breaking into the mainstream American music industry lately

Music festival KAMP LA 2022 announced the first set of musicians who will grace the stage in the two-day event to be held at the Rose Bowl stadium on Oct. 15 and 16.

GOT7 singer Bambam and veteran boy band Super Junior will lead the guest list along with Monsta X, iKON, EXO vocalist Kai, Jeon Somi, R&B singer Zion T. and rookie girl group Lapillus, who is set to make their first U.S. appearance via the music event.

"It's exciting to take part in the KAMP LA lineup," Kai said in a statement shared by Billboard. "This may legitimately be the biggest K-pop event in U.S. history."

Super Junior leader Leeteuk also commented on the upcoming music festival and said, "This is something special that K-pop fans will remember and talk about for years to come."

The full line-up of K-pop artists who will join the event will be unveiled by KAMP in the coming weeks. Aside from Korean pop, the music festival will also feature Korean art, food and gaming products.

Rose Bowl stadium has previously welcomed thousands of K-pop fans in BTS' two concerts in May which sold 113,040 tickets and earned $16.6 million, according to Billboard.

The BTS concerts are the single highest-grossing event in the venue's Boxscore history, edging out Taylor Swift and British band U2.

More K-pop artists are breaking into the mainstream American music industry via appearances in award shows, music festivals, and with their presence on Billboard charts.

Psy, 2NE1, Wonder Girls and BTS paved the way for K-pop to be embraced outside Korea but the key to sustaining K-pop's global appeal is to lose its "Korean-ness," pop music critic Kim Do-Heon said in an article published by the Korean Herald.

"K-pop is not just a music genre, but the whole production system in which idol musicians and their music are carefully planned out and released into the market," Kim said. "This is something that can be adapted to any part of the world. It's now meaningless to talk about how K-pop could be used as a means to spread Korean culture and is at a stage to discuss how the genre and the system can be applied to the unique environments of different regions."
