Detective Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie, left) will have to face plenty of villains besides the Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor) in "Gotham" Season 2. Jessica Miglio/Fox

The premiere of season 2 of the Fox drama series “Gotham” is coming in September, and the studio has just released two trailers. The videos, titled “Aftermath,” is a two-part teaser with one focusing on detective Jim Gordon (Benjamin McKenzie) and the other on Edward Nygma (Cory Michael Smith), who began his transition into becoming the Riddler in Season 1. The first video focuses on the show’s main character, Jim Gordon. The trailer shows his development from being a newbie cop, who was naïve and idealistic, into an experienced-hardened leader. His scenes with mob boss Carmine Falcone (John Doman), clearly outline that transition.

In a scene from the Season 1 finale, Gordon could be seen saving Falcone’s life in the middle of an all-out gang war. He tells the Mafioso the city is in chaos and it needs a strong man to holdthe reins in the criminal underworld. Gordon believes Falcone is the man who can help keep order among the criminals, but Falcone decides otherwise.

After going through an intense power struggle with his underbosses throughout the season, Falcone has had enough. He decides to retire and he chooses Gordon as his unlikely successor. “Gotham needs a lawman now, not a criminal like me, a strong lawman,” he tells Jim.

“Someone needs to grab this city by the neck and shake it hard. That’s you, Jim,” Falcone adds. He teaches Jim another valuable lesson by handing him a knife that once belonged to Jim’s father. Jim finds out his dad, also a cop, was actually friends with the mafia boss. This shows him once again that as a lawman, it is good to have friends in even the most unexpected places. He learned this the hard way in Season 1, when he needed to seek help from Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor) on several occasions.

The second video puts the focus on Edward Nygma. He spent most of the season as the eccentric forensics examiner in the Gotham City Police Department. However, due to the frustrations caused by his unrequited love for police archive worker Kristen Kringle (Chelsea Spack), his character started to take a darker route later in the season.

After Nygma sees Ms. Kringle being mistreated by her boyfriend, he finally cracks and lets the dark side of his personality take over. He murders Officer Doherty (Maroni Thug) and leaves clues for Ms. Kringle. He finds it unbearably sexy when she figures out his clues. He struggles with his split personality on-screen for the first time and viewers are treated to a sneak peek of what to expect from his character in Season 2.

Jim Gordon and Ed Nygma will be joined by other regular characters like Jim’s Partner Harvey Bullock (Donal Logue), Dr. Leslie Thompkins (Morena Baccarin), Penguin and of course, Bruce Wayne and Alfred. The cast also welcomed several new villains like Tigress (Jessica Lucas) and Theo Galavan (James Frain). A much-awaited plotline in Season 2 is Jerome Valeska’s transition into the Joker (Cameron Monaghan).

“Gotham” Season 2 premieres on Monday, September 21, at 8:00 pm ET on FOX.
