It turns out fans were wrong to expect that Barbara Kean (Erin Richards) will become Harley Quinn in “Gotham.” Fox

For so long, “Gotham” fans have been waiting for Barbara Kean (Erin Richards) to transition into the villain Harley Quinn. Producer John Stephens even promised that the character will be introduced in the Season 3 finale, but sadly, this never happened.

According to io9, it’s time for “Gotham” fans to quash their expectations that Harley will be a part of the character pool. Stephens said during the 2017 San Diego Comic-Con that it was a mistake for him to tease about her appearance.

“It was my fault. I had thought I had said and I might have not said it: We’ll see a Harley Quinn-esque character. Because in our mind Barbara was taking on a lot of the ethos and spirit of Harley Quinn, you know, her love of anarchy and violence. All those things that make Harley, Harley in many ways, we were trying to put into Barbara,” he explained. “So I thought that she was becoming a Harley Quinn-esque character. But we’re never going to see Harley Quinn. Sorry about that.”

As for Barbara, she was electrocuted by her former friend Tabitha Galavan (Jessica Lucas) during the Season 3 finale after their big fight. It worried fans that they won’t get to see their beloved queen of the underground anymore, but Babs has become such an integral part of the show that she won’t be let go that easily.

David Mazouz, who plays Bruce Wayne in the series, gave fans some assurance that she is still alive and kicking when he spoke during the Heroes and Villains Fan Fest in Nashville, according to Movie Pilot. When asked how Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) would end up naming his daughter after Barbara, Mazouz hinted at another evolution for Babs, implying that the villainess has not yet bitten the dust. “Maybe she can get good again... and they’ll get back together at some point soon,” he said.

After experiencing that severe electric jolt, maybe Babs will return to her old self - the one Gordon fell in love with and almost married during the first season of the show.

“Gotham” Season 4 will premiere on Sept. 28.
