DC Comics fans were shocked when the “Crisis On Infinite Earths” finale featured a surprise cameo from another Earth’s Flash, played by Ezra Miller. The big screen version of the character quickly appeared on The CW alongside Grant Gustin’s scarlet speedster, and it seems the TV star had the final say over the cameo happening.

Arrowverse executive producer Marc Guggenheim told Variety that Miller’s Flash cameo came late in the game. “Crisis on Infinite Earths” was done filming when Warner Bros. president Peter Roth requested that Miller make an appearance.

“If you’re telling me Ezra Miller can be in the crossover, I can make it happen,” Guggenheim recalled telling Roth. Then he called “The Flash” showrunner Eric Wallace, who said that Gustin had to give his approval before they could move forward.

“I called Eric Wallace who is the showrunner of ‘Flash,’ and he called up Grant Gustin — because the one thing that was our only concern was the thought we didn’t want to do it unless Grant was 100% on-board with it,” the producer revealed. “And he was. He was incredibly enthusiastic and on-board with it. And then we got on the phone with Ezra Miller and told him the scene I had written and he was completely into it.”

There has never been any bad blood between Miller and Gustin. In fact, in 2016, Gustin made it clear that he had no issue with his fellow Flash.

“I fully support Ezra Miller as Barry Allen and the Flash on the feature side of DC,” he wrote on Twitter (via E! Online). “I’ve never met the guy, but I think he is a fantastic and interesting actor.”

Though Gustin was the final stamp of approval, the script itself had to go through before plenty of eyes on the TV and film side to make sure everything made sense. After all, Warner Bros. is still developing a standalone film for Miller.

“Basically, I was really working hand-in-hand with [DC Entertainment CCO/Publisher] Jim [Lee],” Guggenheim told Entertainment Weekly. “From the moment we found out that this was a possibility, to once we knew Grant Gustin was cool and on board with it and Ezra was on board with it, I would send drafts of the scene to both Jim Lee and [DC Entertainment’s film VP] Adam Schlagman and we would just go back and forth. The trick with the scene is that I didn’t want to and they didn’t want me to do anything that stepped on the toes of the Flashpoint movie that they’re developing. So, we really worked hand-in-hand. Jim was really great about just making sure that all the parties were talking to each other, that nothing was getting stalled.”

“Crisis On Infinite Earths” is available to watch in its entirety on The CW website.
