KEY POINTS

  • Markle was an actress before marrying into the British royal family
  • She earned around $450,000 annually for her role on USA Network's "Suits"
  • She also ran lifestyle blog The Tig for three years

Meghan Markle was already earning a considerable income as an actress and had built her own fortune long before she married into royalty. Here's how much she made prior to becoming a duchess.

Markle's net worth was estimated to be between $2 million to $5 million. A 2019 Forbes estimate put her pre-royal wedding wealth at $2.2 million based on the salary she received as one of the stars of the USA Network legal drama "Suits."

The actress-turned-duchess played lawyer Rachel Zane for seven seasons and more than 100 episodes and only quit before marrying Prince Harry in 2018. Fortune reported in 2017 that she was paid about $45,000 per episode while starring in "Suits" and earned around $450,000 annually.

However, Markle hanging up her “suit” did not mean the end of revenue generation for her. The show is syndicated around the world, and she reportedly receives royalties every time the show is played on streaming services Netflix, Amazon Prime and NBC’s Peacock or broadcast in the U.S.

Her income, along with Prince Harry's inheritance from his late mother's estate, allowed the couple to purchase their $14.7 million mansion in Montecito, California, last year, Forbes reported.

Markle also received nearly $200,000 each for her roles in the movies "Remember Me and "The Candidate," according to Knownetworth.com.

Aside from being an actress, Markle used to run a blog called The Tig, which she shut down in April 2017. The lifestyle-centered blog focused on everything Markle loves, including fashion, travel, food and beauty. It also featured recipes, celebrity interviews and an “insider guide” to the best places in London during its three-year run.

She also ventured into fashion before joining the British royal family. She worked on two clothing collections with Canadian retailer Reitmans that lasted until 2017. She is reported to have earned about $80,000 from the deal, per Marie Claire.

Endorsements were also a lucrative revenue stream for the former actress. She is said to have made about $80,000 a year from endorsement and sponsorship deals, Business Insider reported.

Markle married Prince Harry in a lavish ceremony at St. George's Chapel in the British royal family’s Windsor estate in May 2018. They are parents to a son, Archie Harrison, who was born in May 2019, and are currently expecting their second child.

After their life as working royals, the Sussexes signed a $100 million deal with Netflix to produce content for five years, including documentaries, scripted shows and children’s programming. Together with the Duke of Sussex, Markle’s net worth jumped to $50 million following the deal, according to Celebrity Net Worth.

Prince Harry and Markle also signed a deal with streaming service Spotify to produce and host podcasts.
