A Nevada high school teacher was arrested Monday after it was found that she exchanged “inappropriate messages” with a student.

According to Clark County School District police, Breanna K. Hernandez, 27, who taught at Basic Academy of International Studies in Henderson, Nevada, faced two counts each of first-degree kidnapping, lewdness with a minor and luring a minor.

Hernandez’s attorney, Richard Tanasi, said his client, who was hired by the school district in 2015, was on administrative leave since her arrest. She was working from home since November 2018, which was when the school authorities discovered she sent racy texts to a student of the institution and subsequently launched an investigation against the teacher, Review Journal reported.

In addition, the prosecution told the presiding judge on Tuesday – during the accused’s first appearance in court – that she had taken the student to her home “on multiple occasions.” Hernandez was placed under arrest after a month-long probe into her conduct at the school, Lt. Darnell Couthen said.

During the determination of bail, Tanasi argued in the defense of his client, saying Hernandez had voluntarily surrendered to authorities on Monday and that she was not a danger to the community.

It was not immediately clear why the kidnapping charges were brought against Hernandez as no details regarding that charge were made public. The judge set Hernandez’s bail at $5,000 and ordered her to refrain from all forms of contact with the unnamed victim.

Basic High School junior Shelby Basso told NBC-affiliated News 3 Las Vegas that the arrest of Hernandez had become the hot topic in the last few days at the institute.

"I was surprised," Basso said. "I have never really heard of this. It hits close to home, because Basic is close to me. She was chill. She was kind of laid back. Class was easy."

However, she admitted that if Hernandez was indeed guilty of the things she was accused of, she should be punished. “If there is a lot of evidence, then yeah, it's important," said Basso. "We don't need this as underage students. We just need a safer environment."

Cases of teachers being accused of carrying out lascivious acts with students are becoming increasingly common nowadays. Earlier in January, a substitute middle school teacher in Fairfield, Ohio, Tracey J. Abraham, 41, was arrested for allegedly "masturbating in a classroom while students were present."

“Students reported suspicious behavior by the teacher that was taking place behind his desk. Once the administration at Creekside Middle School was made aware of this behavior, the school resource officer immediately removed the substitute teacher from the classroom and building,” Fairfield City School District wrote on its Facebook page in an extensive statement regarding the incident.

Abraham, who taught in Creekside Middle School was charged with public indecency.
