  • The killings took place at a home in Montegut on Jan. 13
  • The assailants had attempted to kill the victim earlier
  • The Lousiana man was charged with third-degree rape of the victim

A Louisiana man accused of rape hired two men to kill his victim before she could testify against him, but the pair ended up shooting the suspect's sister and a neighbor dead instead, police said Monday.

The two women were apparently guarding the rape victim and trying to fight off the miscreants, who opened fire on them.

The suspect, Beaux Cormier, hired the killers, Dalvin Wilson, 25, and Andrew Eskine, 22, to murder the victim. Police have detained all three men and charged them for the double murder, WBRZ-TV reported, citing Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s office.

According to the Sheriff’s office, the killings took place at a home in Montegut on Jan. 13. When Wilson entered the home, he was confronted by Cormier’s sister Brittany, who posed as the rape victim, perhaps to save the real victim. A second woman, Hope Nettleton, 37, was also at the home and tried to fight off the shooter.

"The shooter was asking for the rape victim by name, and Brittany Cormier tells the shooter she's the rape victim, accepting her fate to save the life of the victim," WBRZ-TV quoted Terrebonne Parish Sheriff Timothy Soignet, as saying. "There were good people that ended up dying... it's really hit that community hard."

The assailants reportedly arrived at the home after an initial failed attempt to kill the victim. Nettleton was Brittany’s neighbor, the outlet quoted Soignet, as saying.

Soignet told the publication that both Wilson and Eskine confessed to their roles in the murder while Wilson also revealed that he drove to the house in Eskine’s vehicle.

Cormier has been arrested for third-degree rape of the victim, who is his family member. He is likely to be sentenced if convicted as a registered sex offender, according to the Sheriff’s office.

All three suspects were being held against a $2 million bond. "The death penalty is definitely on the table," WBRZ-TV quoted Louisiana DA, Joe Waitz Jr., as saying.
