Kate Middleton set herself apart from Princess Diana after she agreed to attend an activity that Princess Diana hated when she was still alive.

In the book “Kate: The Future Queen,” royal author Katie Nicholl said that Middleton and Princess Diana had very different thoughts and feelings about the royal family’s annual Boxing Day shoot. The activity takes place on the day after Christmas.

Even before Prince William and Middleton tied the knot, the latter had already been invited for Christmas with the entire royal family. And as such, the Duchess of Cambridge couldn’t decline the invitation. After celebrating the holiday with her own family, she drove to Norfolk to join her then-boyfriend.

“William thought it better to not stay in the main house, where Kate might find things a bit daunting, so he arranged for them to spend several days at Wolferton Marshes, an isolated cottage on the estate. She was thrilled to be part of the festivities and was now an accomplished shot herself,” Nicholl said.

But when Prince William and Prince Harry were younger, the Princess of Wales dreaded Boxing Day. In fact, she never participated in the shoot herself and wasn’t pleased whenever her sons would join the royal family.

“Diana never enjoyed her stays at the royal residences, complaining that William and Harry were always out killing things. But Kate loved the sport and seemed to settle in well,” Nicholl said.

Meanwhile, Prince Harry’s wife, Meghan Markle, seems to take after Princess Diana. After her engagement to the Duke of Sussex, the Duchess of Sussex decided to not participate in the Boxing Day event. Reports also swirled that she encouraged Prince Harry to skip the activity.

And last Christmas, Middleton showed her respect for the “Suits” alum when she waited until after Markle has left the royal residence before she participated in the shooting. Markle is an advocate for animals, particularly dogs.
