King George VI once passed on a surprising burden to Queen Elizabeth II.

While speaking with Express, royal author Marlene Koenig said that there was a time when the late king gave his eldest daughter a tight hug, and the scene is believed to be a poignant one.

“There’s this wonderful scene in the King’s speech after George comes back from the Accession Council. He looks at Elizabeth and he embraces her… That’s probably as realistic as it got, knowing that the burden was now on his daughter’s shoulders, that she was the heir to the throne,” Koenig said.

Koenig added that the Royals at that time never expected for the Queen to take over the throne because King George VI wasn’t supposed to lead the monarchy. Rather, his brother was the one that was supposed to be King but he abdicated and didn’t have children of his own.

Her Majesty inherited the throne from King George VI when she was just 25 years old following the latter’s death. The Queen was crowned one year later at Westminster Abbey. At that time, the Queen was already married to Prince Philip and they also had two children, Prince Charles, and Princess Anne.

After learning the death of her father while on a tour of Kenya, the Queen released a statement expressing her sadness.

“By the sudden death of my dear father, I am called to assume the duties and responsibilities of sovereignty. My heart is too full for me to say more to you today than I shall always work as my father did throughout his reign, to advance the happiness and prosperity of my peoples, spread as they are all the world over,” the Queen said.

The Queen has also been the longest-serving monarch throughout history. She recently celebrated her 93 birthday in the company of her relatives and loved ones.
