Meghan Markle has been working throughout her pregnancy, but she’ll make some changes once she gives birth. The Duchess of Sussex is reportedly planning to take about six months off.

Vanity Fair reports that Markle will make her first post-baby appearance in October alongside husband Prince Harry. They’ll go to the One Young World summit in London. The event will also help Meghan establish herself as a Commonwealth Trust patron.

“Harry is keen to support Meghan in developing her own role and the opportunity to partner with a cause so close to her heart is an ideal stepping stone,” a source told VF. “All being well with the baby, the timing is perfect for her to expand her Commonwealth work through this new One Young World partnership with the Queen’s Commonwealth Trust.”

Royal maternity leaves can vary in length. Kate Middleton took just six weeks off after giving birth to Prince George and four months after Princess Charlotte was born. She took over five months for Prince Louis.

If Meghan’s first child is born in late April/early May, as she reportedly told well-wishers earlier this year, her return will be roughly six months after giving birth.

“It is traditional for new royal mums to take a six-month break from official engagements," royal biographer Duncan Larcombe told Harper’s Bazaar. As Kate has proven, a tradition isn’t a strict rule. Meghan could make an appearance earlier if she decides she is ready.

Meghan will be quite busy once the baby arrives. An anonymous friend of hers told People that the Duchess plans to “make her own baby food.”

“She’s being mindful of what she puts in her body and on her skin and even her at-home cleaning supplies,” the friend said. “She’s hyperaware of what she’s using. She’s looking for natural things.”
