Although Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton have never met Princess Diana, the women have honored their late mother-in-law by recreating her iconic fashion moments.

Over the years, Prince William and Prince Harry have spoken about the love and admiration they have for their mother and have shared those sentiments with their wives. As a result, a royal expert believes, the Duchess of Cambridge and the Duchess of Sussex have made efforts to pay their respect to Diana.

Celebrity stylist, Anthony McGrath told Express.co.uk that Meghan and Kate have used fashion to pay homage to Princess Diana. “As one of the most-loved style icons of the 80s, it’s not surprising that Princess Diana’s fashion sense has provided the Duchesses of Sussex and of Cambridge ample sartorial inspiration,” he said.

“While I do think the Duchess’ choices are to do with fashion, I also think some of their choices are intentionally paying respect to their late mother-in-law.”

McGrath revealed the former “Suits” star has honored Diana by reinventing her iconic looks during important events.

“Think back to the beginning of this year, when Meghan opted for a color block number on a visit to Birkenhead. This color palette was similar to the vibrant red and purple Princess Diana wore during a visit to Hong Kong in 1989,” the Fashion Retail Academy lecturer said.

“She also paid homage to her late mother-in-law during her first Royal Ascot trip when she opted for a classic black and white ensemble, echoing a similar outfit worn by Diana to the races.”

Meanwhile, McGrath noted that Kate opts to recreate Princess Diana’s style for sentimental moments. “Take Kate Middleton’s outfit choices after giving birth, for example,” explained.

“She certainly paid homage to Princess Diana when she introduced Prince George to the world in a polka dot Jenny Packham dress. Diana, too, wore polka dots when she introduced her first child, Prince William, to the world.”

McGrath revealed Kate repeated the notion when she gave birth to her third child in 2018. “Kate continued this trend for her second son, Prince Louis when she stood on the steps of the Lindo Wing in a red Jenny Packham dress that mirrored the outfit Princess Diana wore for her first appearance with Prince Harry,” he said.

“Kate also channeled her late mother-in-law when she dropped off Princess Charlotte to her first day of school earlier this year. The Duchess looked stunning in a pink floral dress similar to the ensemble Diana wore to drop off Prince Harry at school in 1992,” McGrath continued.

While Meghan and Kate try to include Princess Diana in some of their outfits, their engagement rings allow them to feel close to their late mother-in-law every day. While Kate has Diana’s old engagement ring, Meghan’s ring is made up of diamonds from the Princess of Wales’ personal collection.
