A huge crocodile in India was seen Tuesday devouring the body of a man, who had been missing for three days.

The victim was identified as Sukhdev Debu, who lived in the northern state of Uttarakhand. An official in the Surai forest range said it remains unclear if the man was killed by the crocodile, or if the reptile ate the corpse after he was murdered and dumped at the scene, the Hindustan Times reported.

The crocodile was first spotted eating the corpse by a man in Raghuliya village, who had gone to the area to drive away some monkeys.

“When he reached his farm, he saw a crocodile eating a person near a pond. He immediately informed the other villagers and a crowd gathered at the spot. Village head Gurmej Singh informed police and forest officials about the incident, following which Surai forest range team rushed to the spot and found that the crocodile devouring the dead body,” Kundan Kumar, divisional forest officer of Terai East Forest division said, the Hindustan Times reported.

The forest and police officials have sent the remains of the man’s body for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Kumar said Debu was last reported going for a walk in the fields adjoining Khakra pond in Surai forest range three days ago. However, he did not return home after that.

“Prima facie, it seems that he was killed by the crocodile, but actual cause of death will be known after the post-mortem report is received” the senior forest official added, according to Rajya Sameekhsha. [Google Translate showed]

Crocodiles are found in several areas in the state, including the Corbett landscape, Terai area, some areas of Haridwar forest division and Rajaji National Park landscape.

Last month in the state of Gujarat, a huge crocodile attacked and killed a cattle herder while he was standing along the banks of a river. The victim, identified as 52-year-old Ramji Rabari, was grazing his cattle alongside the river when the crocodile pounced on him. A fellow villager, Rajubhai Rabari, arrived at the scene and tried to rescue him, but was not successful.
