It’s International Women’s Day – that time of the year when one needs to brush up their knowledge about the historic feats achieved by women in order to understand how far they have come.

From the suffragette movement and the revolutionary invention of the contraceptive pill to the outcries against sexual harassment that grew on to become global movements, such as the Me Too and Time's Up campaigns, prove women’s ability to redefine society’s long-set norms and ideals for the “fairer sex.”

To make this day — observed since the early 1900s — more special, here is a look at some quotes by female icons whose passion and zeal have helped inspire girls and women from across the world, courtesy Brainy Quote and NDTV:

“Think like a queen. A queen is not afraid to fail. Failure is another steppingstone to greatness.” — Oprah Winfrey

“A lot of people would say 'sexy' is about the body. But to me, 'sexy' is a woman with confidence. I admire women who have very little fear.” — Allegra Versace

“Women are the largest untapped reservoir of talent in the world.” — Hillary Clinton

“If you want something said, ask a man; if you want something done, ask a woman.” — Margaret Thatcher

“Being natural is incredibly empowering for women because it's just who you are. You're embracing all the beautiful things about you from your head to your toes. Because when you mask so much of your natural beauty, people don't get to see that.” — Rozonda Thomas

“Women, like men, should try to do the impossible. And when they fail, their failure should be a challenge to others.” — Amelia Earhart

"I don't like the word ‘sacrifice’ or ‘compromise.’ Anyone who is too into this sacrificing concept has very low self-esteem because they want to be martyrs at the drop of the hat. No! Stand up for yourself!" — Sushmita Sen

“Prejudice is sinful. All blood flows red. And the most harmful and foolish kind of prejudice is prejudice against yourself. Every woman is your sister, and every woman needs her sisters. So try to give other women the courtesy of your compassion, respect, and forgiveness. Love yourself despite -- and because of -- your flaws.” — Jewell Parker Rhodes

“Any time women come together with a collective intention, it's a powerful thing. Whether it's sitting down making a quilt, in a kitchen preparing a meal, in a club reading the same book, or around the table playing cards, or planning a birthday party, when women come together with a collective intention, magic happens.” — Phylicia Rashad

"No country can ever truly flourish if it stifles the potential of its women and deprive itself of the contributions of half of its citizens." — Michelle Obama

“The woman power of this nation can be the power which makes us whole and heals the rotten community, now so shattered by war and poverty and racism. I have great faith in the power of women who will dedicate themselves whole-heartedly to the task of remaking our society.” — Coretta Scott King

“As women, we have super powers. We are sisters. We are healers. We are mothers. We are goddess warriors.” — Merle Dandridge

“If you look back in history of the women who are most memorable and most stylish, they were never the followers of fashion. They were the ones who were unique in their style, breakers of the rules. They were authentic, genuine, original. They were not following the trends.” — Nina Garcia

“There will never be a new world order until women are a part of it.” — Alice Paul

“A gender line... helps to keep women not on a pedestal, but in a cage.” — Ruth Bader Ginsburg
