KEY POINTS

  • iOS 14 can now be downloaded and installed to any compatible iPhone
  • Those who updated to iOS 14 might want to revert to iOS 13
  • There are several steps needed in order to go back to iOS 13

Apple recently released the iOS 14 public beta, allowing everyone with a compatible iPhone to download and install the new operating system version on their handsets.

As it is a new and unfinished operating system version, however, iOS 14 might continue to have some bugs and issues that could cause some early adopters to want to revert back to the earlier, safer and more stable iOS version for their handsets, iOS 13.

Thankfully, those who have updated to iOS 14 and want to revert back to iOS 13 can still do so. Here's how you can do it, according to CNet:

First things first

Reverting to iOS 13 from iOS 14 will require users to get their iPhone, a computer or a Mac, along with a Lightning or USB-C cable to connect the iPhone to the computer. Additionally, users will need to have a lot of patience as the process might take some time to finish.

The actual process

With all of that ready, users can revert to iOS 13 by doing the following:

First, those who use a Mac should update the device's software by clicking on the Apple logo at the top of the screen, then clicking on System Preferences, then on Software Update. Those who will use a Windows computer, on the other hand, should install iTunes on their device and update it to the latest version.

Second, after updating the software, users should connect the iPhone to the computer/Mac.

Third, users will need to put the iPhone into recovery mode. Follow these steps to do so:

  • For iPhone 6s and earlier: users should press and hold both the Top (or Side) and Home buttons at the same time until the recovery mode screen appears.
  • For iPhone 7 and 7 Plus: users should press and hold the Top (or Side) and Volume Down buttons at the same time until the recovery mode screen appears.
  • For iPhone 8 and newer (without Face ID): do the same procedure above, except for the Top button. Use the side button instead.
  • For iPhones with Face ID: Press and quickly release the Volume Up button, then the Volume Down button. After that, users must press and hold the Top button until the device begins to restart, and continue holding the Top button until the device goes into enters recovery mode.

Fourth, the computer or Mac will indicate that the connected iPhone is in recovery mode, and will ask the user if they want to Restore or Update the device. Users who want to go back to iOS 13 will need to click on Restore.
