KEY POINTS

  • It's hard to keep smartphone borrowers away from messages and photos they shouldn't look at
  • The iPhone has a solution for this called "Guided Access"
  • This feature is easy to use

Apple has designed iPhones so that owners will be able to limit the apps that borrowers can use. This feature is called Guided Access, and it works to safely keep prying hands and eyes from reading messages and looking at photos – two items that most iPhone owners wouldn't want anybody but themselves to see.

Here's how to enable and use Guided Access on the iPhone:

  • First, users should go to Settings > General > Accessibility > Guided Access, then enable the Guided Access toggle there. More settings will unlock after this.
  • Once the settings are unlocked, users should tap on Passcode Settings, enable Touch ID, and then confirm to use the Touch ID feature.
  • After that, users should go back to Home screen and launch the app they want locked.
  • Now, with the app launched, users should tap on the home button or side button three times to bring up the Guided Access menu. A preview of the app to be locked will be shown.
  • Users will be given some options to customize the time, access and even touch access for the app to be locked. Users should tweak as desired, then tap on the Start button when done.
  • Users will be asked to confirm the authentication option they chose earlier (passcode, Touch ID and so on). The app will be locked after confirming.

This will effectively lock the phone to the chosen app. Users should do with other apps as desired to keep them safe from prying hands and eyes. This will be very helpful for those with family and friends who love to borrow iPhones.

Users who want to remove the “lock” on certain apps can exit Guided Access mode. Here's how to do it:

  • First, users should tap on the home button or side button three times.
  • Next, after that, users will be prompted to confirm authentication (whether passcode or Touch ID). Users should confirm authentication.
  • A preview of the app will then be shown on the screen. Tapping on the End button located at the top-left area of the screen will exit Guided Access mode.

This will serve to unlock any app that was previously inaccessible to unauthorized people. This tip comes from Gadgets To Use.
