The Jersey Shore was filled with beachgoers on Labor Day, but the situation turned dangerous for two men who were stabbed in broad daylight in Point Pleasant.

Police say that a fight broke out on the beach after 3:30 p.m. EDT. Officials have not confirmed what motivated the fight or the stabbings.

Lifeguards and EMS quickly attended to the stabbing victims. Both were rushed to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, New Jersey. The two men are expected to survive. One victim was stabbed in the chest while the other was stabbed in the hand, Ocean County Sheriff Mike Mastronardy told NBC New York.

The Point Pleasant Beach Police Department said they have two male suspects in custody. Chief of Police Joseph A. Michigan added that there is no lingering threat to the public.

One suspect is said to have tried to make a run for it. Witnesses told the Asbury Park Press that one suspect “vaulted over beach lockers and a fence to escape,” and he managed to run down Ocean Avenue before police caught him.

Another witness told NBC that two groups appeared to be fighting for 15 minutes before the stabbing. “It sounded like the one guy was accusing another guy of hitting on a girl,” an anonymous bystander said.
