  • Jill Biden said she and husband Joe Biden usually have dinner together despite their busy schedules
  • They also have Sunday dinners with their children
  • The first lady shared that her granddaughters love her beautiful table setup and have started following her lead

Dr. Jill Biden got candid about her marriage with President Joe Biden and how they keep their relationship strong amid their busy schedules.

In January, the Bidens moved into the White House following his inauguration. And while her husband has been busy since taking office, the first lady told Kelly Clarkson that they make it a point to have dinner together.

"He's so busy, I'm so busy, but we do keep dinner. And we have dinner together, no phones, the phones have to be off…We just sit and talk for awhile, and he has to go back to work into the night and I'm grading papers," she shared on "The Kelly Clarkson Show."

The president and first lady also have regular "Sunday night dinners" with their children, according to Jill. They share a daughter, Ashley, 39, while Biden is also father to Hunter, 51, and the late Beau and Naomi.

"It's been a little busy lately. We still do it and the kids look forward to it and I think traditions really ground kids," she revealed.

Jill also shared that her granddaughters love her "beautiful" table setup, which includes candles and flowers, and have started making their own dinners "Nana style."

In the interview, the FLOTUS also spoke about how she struggled to find faith after their son Beau succumbed to cancer in May 2015 at age 46.

"I prayed so hard every single day that he was going to live. I felt like he was such a special person that god would let him live. I just prayed and prayed," Jill said. "It just wasn't meant to be. It was hard for me to keep my faith because I had believed so strongly in prayer that he would make it. It took me a long time, Kelly.”

Clarkson surprised fans when she announced last week that she had scored Jill's first solo broadcast interview since becoming first lady. The announcement sparked debate among some Twitter users, with some accusing Clarkson of snubbing Jill's predecessor, Melania Trump.

However, others came to Clarkson's defense, pointing out that Trump rarely made TV appearances when she was in the White House. "Melania didn't do interviews one-on-one. All she had to do was reach out. A TON of people, including Kelly, would have wanted an interview. And she didn't get magazine covers b/c they require an interview to go with it. And Melania didn't want to do them. Her choice," one person tweeted.

Meanwhile, Jill's office has announced that the first lady will be traveling to Meriden, Connecticut, on Wednesday, NBC Connecticut reported. No additional information has been shared regarding what the first lady will be doing in the city, but the White House said more details will be released soon.
