  • The hip-hop song tackles SEVENTEEN’s hardships during its rookie days

K-pop act SEVENTEEN performed their new track, “CHEERS” on MTV’s “We Speak Music.” The group is the first K-pop act to be featured on the program which aims to promote artists who deliver the best performances on MTV and Video Music Awards.

“CHEERS” was composed by the group’s three unit leaders S. Coups, Woozi and Hoshi and is part of the group’s repackaged album “SECTOR 17” which was released Monday.

The hip-hop song tackles SEVENTEEN’s hardships during their rookie days and their determination to succeed in the industry despite the odds, as reflected in the lyrics, “They all said we'd crash and burn /They don't know, they don't know/I don't know how high we'll rise/Everybody raise your hands up to the sky.”

SEVENTEEN is comprised of four subunits: the hip-hop unit led by S. Coups, the vocal unit led by Woozi, and the performance unit headed by Hoshi. The leaders themselves comprise the fourth sub-unit known as the SVT LEADERS.

The track marks the first single of the SVT LEADERS in five years following their 2017 single, “Change Up.”

Launched in 2015, SEVENTEEN is considered a self-producing group as its members are actively involved in songwriting and creating the choreography of their songs. The group is composed of S. Coups, Jeonghan, Joshua, Jun, Hoshi, Wonwoo, Woozi, DK, Mingyu, The8, Seungkwan, Dino and Vernon.

The group was named 2015's most impressive male rookie group by Billboard following the release of their singles “Adore U,” “Shining Diamond,” “Jam” and “Ah Yeah.”

The group shared their thoughts and inspiration about their new album Tuesday.

“This is SEVENTEEN’s first repackaged album in six years after our first studio album ‘Love & Letter’ so it feels new and I’m looking forward to it,” Seungkwan told Soompi.

“For Carats (fandom name), we also prepared this album with great care. I hope the energy we want to convey is conveyed well to Carats," Dino added.

In creating the new album, Mingyu said the members worked hard to match its concept with their previous studio album, “Face the Sun” where the group discovers a “new world" to conquer.
