KEY POINTS

  • Twitter accounts of Joe Biden, Barack Obama and Kanye West were hacked on Wednesday
  • All the accounts shared a similar message that promoted a Bitcoin scam
  • Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos’ Twitter accounts were also compromised

Twitter accounts of several notable personalities, including Kanye West, Elon Musk, and Democratic Presidential candidate Joe Biden, were hacked on Wednesday and posted a similar message that made everyone believe their social media accounts have been compromised.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, all the accounts that were hacked posted a message promoting a cryptocurrency scam. The message also included a Bitcoin wallet address and it urged the netizens to send them money. The message also indicated that the amount sent in would be doubled.

Twitter did not waste any time upon learning about the issue and released a statement right away. The social networking site revealed that it is “aware” of the security incident and is doing everything to “fix it.” The company also noted that the users, whose accounts have been compromised, will not be able to “tweet” or “reset” their passwords while it reviews the whole situation.

“We are aware of a security incident impacting accounts on Twitter. We are investigating and taking steps to fix it. We will update everyone shortly,” the company wrote on the micro-blogging website.

As of late, most accounts are able to tweet again. However, the company made it clear that their (accounts that were hacked) ability to tweet might “come and go” until the matter is completely solved.

“Most accounts should be able to tweet again. As we continue working on a fix, this functionality may come and go. We're working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible,” Twitter wrote.

Apart from the aforementioned names, Twitter accounts of former U.S. President Barack Obama, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg, and former Microsoft CEO Bill Gates were also hacked.

The official accounts of big companies like Uber and Apple were also compromised.

In December 2019, Mariah Carey’s Twitter account was also hacked by an unnamed user on New Year’s Eve and posted numerous ill-suited tweets
