Kate Middleton and Prince William are often said to not be as affectionate and as touchy-feely in public as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

However, the royal couple was once like the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, especially during the first few months of their married life. A series of throwback photos proved that this was really the case.

In one of the snaps, Prince William and Middleton are out in public for their royal engagement. The Duchess of Cambridge is wearing a white long-sleeved dress and Prince William is wearing his signature coat and tie. While talking to royal fans, Middleton was photographed wrapping her arm around Prince William’s waist.

Middleton also held on to Prince William’s back while talking to royal fans during the same engagement. And the future king also assisted his wife while they were walking outdoors by directing their path and holding her back. While standing a few inches away from each other, Prince William stretched out his arm to reach Middleton.

“Duchess Catherine of Cambridge showing PDA, touching her husband Prince William. Discreet and classy!” the royal fan captioned the snap.

But several years passed and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have shown less and less PDA whenever they are together. Royal etiquette expert Myka Meier said that this is because the royal couple is expected to act professionally when they are doing their royal duties.

“The likely reasoning is more that while traveling on a tour such as the India trip, technically the couple is working representatives of the British monarchy. The couple is likely to show very little PDA, if any, to remain professional during their designated roles abroad,” she told People.

Prince William’s grandparents, Queen Elizabeth II, and Prince Philip, also rarely show affection towards each other when they are outdoors. Prince William may simply be following in the monarch’s footsteps especially since he will also become King one day.
