  • Katie Couric said it was painful to understand what was going on with Matt Lauer after the sexual misconduct allegations surfaced

Katie Couric has commented on Jennifer Aniston’s “The Morning Show” role.

There are rumors that Aniston’s character in the Apple TV + series alongside Reese Witherspoon was inspired by the American TV personality. The journalist and author has not commented on the character Aniston played until she appeared in the “Everything Iconic With Danny Pellegrino” podcast.

Couric admitted that the series was “really interesting.” The show features Aniston’s male co-host (Steve Carell) who is being accused of misconduct similar to Couric’s former “Today” co-host, Matt Lauer.

Couric praised Aniston’s performance, but she had one complaint - for her, some parts of Aniston’s character were hard to believe.

“I think Jennifer Aniston is great. I think the character, the role -- I wish they had made her more charismatic because I think you need a certain ebullience to pull off a show like that,” Couric said.

“I mean, I’m writing all about all this stuff in my book, so I’m not going to say too much. But I thought it was really interesting.”

During the show’s winter press tour, Aniston explained that the series was about #MeToo and more. It also covered gender dynamics, power dynamics, and abuse of power aside from sexual abuse. It’s about power struggles in general, she said.

“So we wanted to have that perspective of that character to be explored. And also to have the conversations that were going on behind closed doors that people were too afraid to have out in the world because it was just too dangerous,” she explained.

In 2019, Couric opened up about the disgraced anchor and her former “Today” colleague. She admitted that she couldn’t believe the things she heard about him.

In October, journalist Ronan Farrow released a book entitled “Catch and Kill,” which detailed the sexual misconduct allegations at NBC. One producer claimed that Lauer raped her, but Lauer denied the allegations.

“It’s been painful for me on many levels, especially when it comes to understanding what was going on with Matt, who I think ultimately turned out to be two very different people, in terms of my relationship with him versus some of the other things that were going on,” Couric said.
