In one of the quickest-called races of the election, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has defeated Democratic challenger Amy McGrath in Kentucky, according to the New York Times.

Democratic donors had poured millions in an effort to upset McConnell.

With 53% reporting, McConnell had 675,5345 votes, compared to McGrath's 521,932 votes. Libertarian Brad Barron had 43,198 votes.

McConnell has served as Kentucky’s senator since 1985, and has been the Senate Majority Leader since 2015. He holds fiscally conservative views and has opposed the Affordable Care Act.

McConnell, who calls himself the “Grim Reaper,” is famous for his obstructionist tactics.

In 2016, he blocked President Barack Obama’s Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland, refusing to bring it to the floor for a vote, with the seat eventually filled by President Trump's nominee Neil Gorsuch in 2017. He has brazenly sought to fill the federal courts with conservative judges, recently pushing through Trump Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett.

McGrath, a former Marine fighter pilot, and moderate Democrat, had run on strengthening the Affordable Care Act, but also holds pro-gun views. She has opposed the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 under the Trump administration but has expressed willingness to work with the current president.
