Dan Stevens as David
“Legion” creator Noah Hawley talked about that shocking post-credits scene involving David (Dan Stevens) in Season 1 finale of the FX series. FX

After finally being free from the Shadow King for the first time in his life, poor David (Dan Stevens) found himself trapped in a mysterious mechanical orb in the post-credits scene in “Legion” Season 1 finale.

During a press event earlier this week, Hawley didn’t reveal where that drone-like device is taking David, but he did share some insights into why they decided to end the show’s freshman run with that unsettling scene.

“We want to keep the pressure on. Out of the frying pan and into the fire is a pretty good approach to storytelling on some level,” Comic Book Resources quoted Hawley. “If you keep the pressure on someone whose psychology has always been unstable, it’s going to keep [him] from being able to really [heal].”

“I mean, what he should [really] do is go on a retreat for a year and just kind of be one with nature, eat three meals a day and take walks in the woods and learn how to be a person, the way other people are persons,” continued Hawley. “But he’s not going to have that luxury, because he’s on to the next crisis, and I think that’s going to continue to keep the pressure on him. … That stress on someone who is disjointed can be very destructive.”

In a separate interview with Deadline, Hawley said that what happened in the post-credits scene clearly indicates that Season 2 will tell a brand new story.

“It means that Season 2 is beginning. It means that we’ve completed this story and we’re starting a new one,” said the Emmy winner. “You know, my goal is always that the first season would be about fighting the enemy within and, you know, learning about this entity that was inside of David and about getting it out of David, and Season 2 will be about then the enemy without and this entity now we know is a person.”

“But for us it’s never a simple straight line between point A and point B,” explained Hawley. “So … I wanted to complicate it … by having David disappear just at the moment where he’s about to go off in pursuit of the Shadow King. As for who’s behind the orb and who sent it, I think that’s one of the mysteries we want to explore in Season 2.”

FX has yet to set the premiere date for the 10-episode Season 2 of “Legion,” but Hawley said (via The Hollywood Reporter) that their goal is “to hit the same air date next year.” “Legion” Season 1 premiered on Feb. 8, so fans can expect Season 2 to kick off around that date in 2018.
