KEY POINTS

  • Luka Doncic sets an NBA and franchise record in a classic win over the Knicks
  • Doncic now holds a franchise record for most points scored in a game
  • He becomes the first NBA player to register a 60-20-10 triple-double

There is no doubt that one of the polarizing stars in the NBA right now is Luka Doncic of the Dallas Mavericks.

The Slovenian guard proved that anew, but this time around with flare, as he led the Mavs to a 125-121 overtime win over the New York Knicks on Tuesday, December 27.

Against the Knicks, the third overall pick of the 2018 NBA Draft took it a notch higher when he finished with an astounding output of 60 points, 21 rebounds, and 10 assists.

But in the course of putting up those numbers, there was his heroics in regulation.

Doncic intentionally missed a free throw on purpose and ended up with the loose ball on the rebound to sink a jumper, tying the knot at 115-all with only a second remaining in the game.

When the smoke cleared, Doncic not only steered the Mavericks to victory but also set multiple records.

At the top of the list Is the Slovenian becoming the first player to register a 60-20-10 game in league history.

It was the seventh triple-double performance for Doncic this 2022-23 NBA season.

Aside from that feat, the Slovenian also registered the first 60-point game in Mavericks history.

Previously, the only player who played for the Dallas Maverick to score the most points was Dirk Nowitzki per Statmuse.

The German scored 53 points on December 2, 2004 in a 113-106 win over the Houston Rockets.

The 20017 NBA Most Valuable Player also had 16 rebounds, four blocks, three steals, and two assists in 49 minutes of action at the time.

Ironically, the Slovenian sensation came close to eclipsing Nowitzki's best single-game scoring record back in February.

At the time, Doncic finished with 51 points, nine rebounds, and six assists in 40 minutes of action in their 112-105 win over the Los Angeles Clippers.

As for Doncic's 21 rebounds, he tied the same number of caroms that Zaza Pachulia had in a December 1, 2015 game between the Mavericks and the Portland Trail Blazers.

The Mavs won that game, 115-112.
