KEY POINTS

  • "M3gan" slayed the North American box office with $30.2 million sales
  • The horror sci-fi also impressed with its $45 million global cume in its first week
  • Creator James Wan said the "Chucky" franchise inspired him to make "M3gan"

"M3gan" fans haven't seen the last of the spooky artificial intelligence doll yet. The horror sci-fi is getting a sequel after dancing its way to the global box office with impressive numbers.

Deadline learned from unnamed sources Friday that a second movie is already in early development.

In an interview with Collider, "M3gan" director Gerard Johnstone confirmed that there is talk of a sequel happening.

This may not come as a shock since the movie killed it (no pun intended) in its debut week, raking in impressive ticket sales at the global box office.

According to Deadline, "M3gan" was only projected to earn somewhere between $17 million and $20 million this weekend. However, the Universal, Blumhouse and Atomic Monster title blew away expectations by securing $30.2 million in the North American market, placing second at the box office this weekend.

The top spot continues to be held by James Cameron's "Avatar: The Way of Water," which managed to earn $45 million in the region four weekends into its release. Last week, the "Avatar" sequel was poised to cross the $1.4 billion mark.

This weekend, The Hollywood Reporter announced that the epic sci-fi already made $1.7 billion globally. Its international total was already $1.19 billion, while its domestic ticket sales reached $526.8 million, based on the latest figures.

Meanwhile, "M3gan" is expected to perform well since the horror film has taken the internet by storm and made its presence felt on social media. It displaced DreamWorks' "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish" from the second spot in the North American box office, and it also bagged $14.8 million internationally, bringing its worldwide cume to $45 million, according to Collider.

The success of "M3gan" was somehow inevitable considering that it was produced by esteemed filmmaker James Wan, who wrote the story with screenwriter Akela Cooper. Wan is no stranger to making movies with scary dolls since he is also responsible for the "Conjuring" franchise and its spinoff "Annabelle."

Speaking of what made him decide to come up with a movie like "M3gan," Wan exclusively told Deadline Sunday that the "Chucky" franchise was his inspiration for the project.

"In my previous doll movies — they don't kill anyone. Annabelle never gets up and walks around. Everyone says I'm the killer doll guy. So I said, I'm going to make a killer doll movie for a brand new generation. Today's kids didn't grow up with Chucky like we did," he said.
