Law enforcement officials in New York City are not planning to charge Malia Obama’s stalker who asked her to marry him, TMZ reported Tuesday. The man identified as Jair Nilton Cardoso is reported to have stalked former President Barack Obama’s elder daughter in Washington, D.C. and New York City before being detained by police last week.

After arresting Cardoso, authorities were planning to book him on stalking and harassment charges. However, they decided not to file any charges against him as he apparently maintained distance from Malia, sources told TMZ.

According to police, Cardoso did not pose a verbal or physical threat to the 18-year-old as he did not get close to her other than standing outside the Weinstein Company film studio, where Malia is interning, the report said. He was arrested after he stood outside the studio with a sign reading: “Will you marry me?”

According to an April 19 report by New York Post, law enforcement officials had warned Cardoso to stay away from Malia. However, he did not pay heed to their orders and turned up outside the Weinstein Company. Secret Service tracked him at his Brooklyn home April 13, and interrogated him. After questioning Cardoso was emotionally unstable and was taken to Kings County Hospital for a psychiatric evaluation, the report added.

Malia left Washington, D.C. late January for her internship at Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein's production company after taking a gap year after graduating from Sidwell Friends School in the capital. She is expected to attend Harvard University this fall. Her mother, Michelle Obama, had said previously said Malia wants to pursue a career in the film industry. The teen also reportedly turned down modeling offers to concentrate on the film and television business.

“Malia has a model body that would be great for runways. She has been offered several opportunities to model but turned them all down. She wants to be behind the camera, not in front of it,” sources told Naughty Gossip last month. “She loves the film and TV business and loves reading scripts. She will leave the modeling to Kendall Jenner. She has zero interest of being famous like her dad.”
