Man Allegedly High On Drugs Fatally Stabs Girlfriend With Sword, Calls Cops To Report 'Burglary'

A Queens man fatally stabbed his girlfriend with a sword while he was high on drugs and called cops to falsely report a burglary, authorities said.

Police arrested the suspect, 37-year-old Peter Ikonomou, for murdering his 35-year-old girlfriend, Mindy Singer, at their apartment in Briarwood on Tuesday. Singer's body was found stuffed in the closet of the apartment with a 46-inch sword stuck on her back, police said Wednesday, as reported by NY Daily News.

The brutal slaying came to light when Ikonomou's mother went to check on him after she did not hear from her son for long. While opening the front door, Ikonomou appeared to be high on drugs and slammed it before the mother could get in. He then ran back to the house and screamed from the balcony of his apartment that he had killed somebody, Ikonomou's mother told the police.

Ikonomou then called 911 and complained that “fake cops and locksmiths” were trying to break enter his apartment. However, when the cops arrived at the scene, he met them with a stick in his hand and said his girlfriend was “in the closet." The cops then recovered Singer's body from the closet with multiple stab wounds.

Police soon identified Ikonomou as the suspect and took him into custody. He struggled with the officers and kicked out a window of the squad care when they put him inside, a witness told NY Daily News. “He kept kicking and kicking and kicking until he bust that window open. He was saying he was having a heart attack,” the witness said.

Ikonomou has been charged with murder, manslaughter, assault and criminal possession of a weapon, New York Post reported.

“My heart is broken and my family and I will never recover from this nightmare. Words cannot do this outrageous tragedy justice," Singer’s aunt, Debra Levine, wrote on Facebook, saying the whole family is devastated at the loss.

According to police records, Ikonomou had been arrested seven times prior to the incident on charges of drug possession and driving while on drugs. However, there were no previous records of domestic incidents involving the pair, cops said.
