A 32-year-old man in India allegedly shot and killed his wife because he was annoyed with their arguments. He then shot his mother-in-law for taking his wife's side.

Police received a call about an alleged shooting in Dwarka, a city in the Indian state of Gujarat on Saturday night. Arriving officers found the bodies of two women, Nidhi, 21 and her mother Beero, 55, dead from gunshot wounds. Police also found the suspect, Mahesh, standing at the scene of the crime.

The officers at the scene asked the accused to identify himself. "In reply, he told us that he had done his work by killing his wife and mother-in-law," an officer said to the Times of India.

Upon canvassing the crime scene, officers found eight empty bullet casings. Police have seized the firearm.

In January 2020, Mahesh and Nidhi got married and shortly after the suspect’s mother-in-law moved in with them, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Dwarka) Shankar Chaudhary. After the wedding, the couple started having problems, which led to constant fights between the husband and wife. During these disagreements, Beero allegedly always supported her daughter.

According to the police, the couple allegedly fought about Mahesh not being able to support the family financially. "Another issue was related to their one-and-half-year-old child. The woman used to tell him that she will keep the child in her custody," an officer told the outlet.

On the day of the shooting, the couple allegedly had another argument when an enraged Mahesh pulled out a pistol and shot his wife and mother-in-law.

Police said that the accused was the one who initially called them and reported the crime, the Hindustan Times reported.

The bodies of the victims have been sent for an autopsy to determine the cause of death. "The autopsy report will clear the fact about how many times both of them were shot," the officer told the publication.

Mahesh has been taken into custody in connection with the murder of his wife and mother-in-law. He has been charged with an attempt to commit culpable homicide.
