A 34-year-old Maryland man assaulted his wife last week after she FaceTimed him while having sex with another man inside a car in Pennsylvania, police documents showed.

William Atkinson asked a friend to drive him to the parking lot of a Best Western hotel in Somerset Tuesday so he could confront his 32-year-old wife and her sex partner, both of whom were not named in the report.

Atkinson's wife and her male companion had been "egging [Atkinson] on" during the FaceTime calls, The Smoking Gun reported, citing an affidavit of probable cause.

When he arrived at the parking lot, Atkinson allegedly struck his wife's companion, who soon left the scene. Atkinson then allegedly punched and kicked his wife, to whom he had been married for three years, according to police.

Police learned of the incident after an unnamed individual called 911 and reported shots being fired at the scene.

Responding officers found Atkinson's wife bleeding heavily from her face, nose and mouth with severe bruising and marks all over her face, the police document said. Additionally, she was described as "struggling to breathe and crying for help."

Police said Atkinson admitted to taking his wife to the grass behind a car and "striking her in the face with an open hand and beating her." However, Atkinson claimed he never struck her with a closed fist or kicked her, the affidavit said.

However, the 911 caller said via a sworn statement that Atkinson was "actively kicking" his wife in the face. Police also seized Atkinson's shoes, one of which was covered in blood.

Authorities were able to determine that Atkinson had assaulted his wife despite the woman being "in a state of extreme excitement and distress" and communicating in a "difficult" manner as she pointed at her husband when officers asked what had happened to her face, police said.

Authorities obtained statements from all involved parties and witnesses except for Atkinson's wife, who was "extremely intoxicated" and was "not in her right mind" due to the severity of her injuries. She was transported to a hospital while handcuffed, where she received medical care.

Atkinson's shoes were seized as evidence, along with a stun gun, knife and 9mm gun. The stun gun and knife allegedly belonged to Atkinson's wife, while the firearm was found in the van Atkinson traveled in.

Police found no magazine or rounds in the seized gun despite the 911 caller reporting shots being fired. A search of the area with a metal detector also yielded negative results of any magazine, rounds or shell casings.

Atkinson was taken to the Somerset Police Department without incident before being transferred to the Somerset County Jail. He was charged with felony aggravated assault and misdemeanor reckless endangerment.

Atkinson is being held in the county jail in lieu of a $30,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in court this Tuesday for a preliminary hearing.

Atkinson's wife was arrested in 2016 for attempted murder after she shot at her boyfriend during an argument inside a residence in Cumberland, Maryland, according to the report. The boyfriend was not hit. She was later sentenced to two years of probation after she pleaded guilty to reckless endangerment.

It was unclear whether Atkinson was her boyfriend at the time of the 2016 incident.
