A 25-year-old has allegedly bludgeoned his mother and brother to death while they were sleeping and attacked three other family members and a neighbor when they tried to restrain him.

In the wee hours of Thursday, the man, identified as Amarchad Jangid, entered his 60-year-old mother’s room with a hammer and hit her in the head with it. He then went to his younger brother’s room and bludgeoned him with the hammer. Both of them died on the spot, local daily the Times of India reported.

The victims were sleeping in their respective rooms when the incident took place at their home in Bhinay, a town in the western Indian state of Rajasthan.

Meanwhile, upon hearing the commotion, the father of the accused, identified as 65-year-old Ramdhan, rushed out of his room and found Jangid entering another room where his three other brothers were sleeping. Ramdhan immediately called out his sons, who woke up and escaped.

A few neighbors rushed to their rescue. When all of them tried to restrain Jangid, he attacked his father, two brothers and a neighbor with the weapon and fled the scene.

Following a search, the accused was traced Thursday evening and taken into custody. He was being interrogated and the reason behind the attack was not known.

An investigation, however, revealed that the man lived in another town and was looking for a job. Due to the pandemic, he couldn’t find a job and returned to the town where his parents and younger brother lived and started preparing for competitive exams. The other three brothers, who also worked in different towns, had come back to the town a day before the incident.

"Accused Amarchad Jangid, who is preparing for competitive exams, hit his mother Kamla Devi (60) and younger brother Shivraj (22) in the early hours with a hammer when they were sleeping. The reasons behind the murders are not clear yet," police said, NDTV reported.

The father, brothers and the neighbor were rushed to the hospital for treatment. Their condition remained unknown. Meanwhile, the bodies of the two victims were handed over to the family Friday morning following an autopsy.
