A 23-year-old man in Mississippi was killed after he accidentally shot himself during an argument over his order at a Chick-Fil-A drive-thru.

Kendarius Vaughn of Jackson was at a Chick-Fil-A drive-thru line on U.S. 80 in Clinton, Mississippi on Friday evening when an argument broke out between him and a backseat passenger over an order. At the line, Vaughn allegedly pulled out a gun. Initially, he waved it around and held it towards the roof of the car, WBRZ reported.

At one point, Vaughn turned the firearm toward his brother who was sitting in the back seat. The brother reportedly grabbed the victim’s arm to keep the gun from being aimed at him, the Clinton Police Department said.

The brother then pushed Vaughn’s arm back towards the front seat and the gun accidentally went off. It critically injured Vaughn. The backseat passenger rushed the victim to a hospital. But, Vaughn succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

"Whatever they were doing in the car, the intended consequence was not for someone to get shot, but we are going through all the evidence," Clinton Police Chief Ford Hayman said to WAPT-TV. "If something in the evidence points us in a different direction then we will come back and charge, but right now it's unintentional."

However, a Clinton spokesperson said that there was no altercation between the victim and the passenger. "There was no confrontation. No arguing going on, so that's why we suspect it was just an accident," Clinton director of communications and tourism, Amanda Jones said to the outlet.

The fatal shooting is being considered an accidental death, said police. The case is under investigation and no charges have been filed as of yet.

In December, a 3-year-old North Carolina girl died after she accidentally shot herself. The girl allegedly found the gun in a truck on Christmas and accidentally pulled the trigger. She was rushed to a hospital with a critical head injury, where she later died. The victim’s father said the gun was left by a person visiting the family for the holiday.
