A biker died after hitting a tree while trying to avoid ramming into a dog. The incident took place in the western Indian state of Maharashtra on Wednesday.

Police said the deceased was riding the bike at a high speed and was not wearing a helmet when a stray dog came in the middle of the road. The 41-year-old unidentified man tried to avoid the canine and in the process rammed into a tree. He suffered serious head injuries. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was declared brought dead. The cousin of the deceased, who was riding pillion with him, suffered injuries to his legs and back.

A case was registered against the deceased for causing his own death due to negligence and for rash driving on a public road.

Interesintly the police said the man alone cannot be blamed for the accident. They believe the accident could have been avoided if the tree had been cut down by the local authority.

“Sometimes some people are in a hurry and hence do over speeding at times, but if they met with an accident by hitting these trees, how can they be blamed? The concerned authorities need to set up barriers well before the trees so that the impact of the accident is absorbed, limiting the injuries to the ones involved,” the police told local daily the Times of India.
