A man died in a freak accident after he was chased by a street dog while returning home on a two-wheeler and was hit by a bus. The incident took place in the southern Indian state of Kerala on Thursday.

The victim, identified as 21-year-old Haveend Kumar, a graduate student, was returning home on his bike after dropping a friend when the dog chased him. In order to escape, he increased the speed of the bike and rushed toward the main road where he was hit by a bus.

“He dropped his friend at his house and while returning, a street dog chased his bike. He increased the speed of the vehicle in panic and rushed towards the main road. His bike was hit by a superfast bus and he was thrown off the bike. The bike got stuck under the bus and front portion of the bus got mangled, which indicated at the impact of the accident,” police told local daily the Times of India.

The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was declared brought dead. His body was handed over to his family following an autopsy Thursday afternoon. His friends and teachers paid last respects to him.

Remembering the victim, a teacher said, “He was a friendly person. He was active in college activities. It is sad that he died in the accident.” His funeral service was held Thursday evening.

Meanwhile, a case of rash driving and causing death by negligence was registered the driver of the superfast bus which hit the victim.
