A teenage girl was shot to death by an 18-year-old man after she refused to pick up some marijuana that fell on the floor of a Kentucky home.

The suspect eventually turned himself in after leaving the 16-year-old victim with a gunshot wound at a woman's house in Burlington at around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Demarkus Hedges and the victim, Scarlett Tucker, knew each other and spent most of Monday night and Tuesday morning together before the shooting took place, according to LOCAL 12. Two other 18-year-olds and a 17-year-old were also with them at the time of the shooting which took place when a bag of marijuana fell on the floor of the bedroom and Hedges demanded Tucker to pick it up, witnesses told deputies.

When the teenage girl didn't comply, Hedges pointed a gun at her and shot her in the head. He then fled from the scene while the others stayed behind until deputies arrived.

Tucker succumbed to her injuries by the time deputies from the Boone County Sheriff's Office arrived at the house. They found the victim in the bedroom with a gunshot wound to her head.

The shooter, victim, and the remaining witnesses "spent much of Monday night into Tuesday morning together in areas of Cincinnati and Covington. They later arrived at the Silver Brook Drive address ..." the sheriff's office said in a statement.

According to witness statements, Hedges fired a single shot when Tucker "rebuffed him," the statement added.

"The three teenage witnesses are cooperating with the investigation. There were others living in the home when the incident occurred but were sleeping in separate rooms and not involved or witness to the shooting," the sheriff's office further said.

Officials released details about the suspect and initially said he was at large following the shooting, WLWT reported.

An update issued by the sheriff's office shortly after said Hedges turned himself in Tuesday afternoon.

" ... Demarkus Hedges turned himself in to the United States Marshals Service in Covington, Kentucky. The Marshals Service will lodge Hedges at the Boone County Detention Center, where he will be held on a $1 million bond," the update said.

Hedges was charged with murder, tampering with evidence, and unlawful transactions with a minor.
