A 2-year-old girl has died in India after allegedly being slammed on the floor by her father who just had a heated argument with his wife.

The father, 24-year-old Biju Kisan, from Deogarh district in the eastern Indian state of Odisha, was accused of murdering his toddler child Monday, The New Indian Express reported.

Kisan married his wife, 20-year-old Shakuntala three years ago, and the couple reportedly fought over petty issues. Fed up with the frequent fights, Sakuntala went to her parent's house with her toddler daughter a few months ago. However, she came back to their house Sunday to get some documents, and the couple once again had a dispute.

When Shakuntala was returning to her parent's residence alongside the child Monday, Kisan stopped her. This led to a heated argument between the two. Kisan then grabbed the girl from his wife and threw her on the ground.

The child was rushed to a hospital but she was eventually pronounced dead. Officials have sent the child's body for an autopsy to confirm the exact cause of her death.

Meanwhile, police took Kisan into custody for questioning and registered a case against him. However, it is unclear if Kisan has been charged in the case.

The suspect frequently abused the wife after coming home drunk and was reportedly in an inebriated state when the argument happened Monday, according to local news outlet Odisha Bytes.

In a similar incident, a father was arrested in India in November 2022 for killing his 6-year-old son following an argument with his wife. The suspect, identified as Nandan Adhikari, allegedly slit the throat of his younger son, Lakshya, while his wife, Sunita went to drop their 13-year-old child at school after a fight with him. The 6-year-old boy was found lying in a pool of blood when the mother returned home. His body was sent for an autopsy to determine the cause of his death. Adhikari, who was then arrested as the prime suspect in the case, reportedly confessed to the crime during questioning and told cops he and his wife had frequent fights over several issues.
