“Married at First Sight” couple Cody Knapek and Danielle DeGroot have decided to end their marriage a year after tying the knot. The two have already announced that they are divorcing.

On Tuesday, the reality TV husband and wife exclusively revealed to People that they are terminating their marriage. “After a year of marriage, and much thought and consideration, we are deeply saddened to announce that we’ve decided to go our separate ways,” the two said in a statement.

They maintained that they will continue to be good friends following their divorce. “We remain the closest of friends, and have enjoyed sharing our lives with our ‘Married at First Sight’ family,” they wrote.

Knapek and DeGroot ended their statement by thanking the people who helped them through their journey. “We want to thank the experts for their guidance and love throughout all of this. This process has only strengthened our belief that true love does exist,” they concluded.

DeGroot also took to Instagram to pour her heart out about their decision to split. “It hasn’t been an easy year, but it has been one of a lot of personal growth and of meeting some amazing people, including the one I got to marry,” she wrote.

The dietician added that though she and Knapek value and respect marriage, they have decided to terminate their legal union because “life is short and we also value happiness.” DeGroot also claimed that she still has nothing but love for her soon-to-be ex-husband.

Knapek and DeGroot tied the knot on Aug. 6, 2016. The first few months of their married life were featured on Lifetime’s reality series. In the course of the show, the two evidently struggled with intimacy issues because DeGroot did not want to consummate their marriage.

On the July 6 episode of “Married at First Sight” Season 5, Knapek admitted that their lack of intimacy was getting in the way of their union. “Not having sex delays everything else,” he was quoted as saying by Us Weekly.

Despite their problem, the two opted to remain married until the finale of the series. Knapek and DeGroot are the first couple to split from their season. Anthony D’Amico and Ashley Petta, as well as Nate Duhon and Shiela Downs, are still married, as per E! News.
