A massive 14-foot-long snake has been captured by authorities after construction workers spotted the reptile lying on a busy pavement.

The giant reptile was found near the housing association in River Clyde Homes in Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland, on Tuesday. Initial reports said that the snake had died. However, the police later issued a statement confirming that the reptile was still alive and that it was being treated "at a local veterinary practice," reported The Scottish Sun.

Social media users are baffled by the size of the snake after the pictures and videos of the sighting surfaced on the internet.

According to the authorities, they have been receiving reports of multiple sightings of such giant snakes in the area.

Another video circulated online a little later, showing a large dead snake on a hillside overlooking the town. Another clip showing a similar-sized snake outside a busy pub was also shared on social media on the same day.

"Local social media posts have highlighted this incident with photographs and commentary around the find, and at this stage, there have been a number of other similar reports relating to snakes being spotted in the local community," a police spokesman said.

According to Inspector Paul Thompson of Greenock Police Station, officers are already dealing with the reports about a number of sightings of large snakes in the Greenock and Gourock area.

"I would urge anyone who may come across a snake not to approach it, but to call police reporting its position. At this stage we are carrying out local inquiries in order to establish if anyone is missing any snakes," Thompson said as per Daily Record.

Where these giants are coming from and how they are ending up in the streets remain unclear. The authorities are now investigating whether they have escaped from a zoo or an animal reserve.

"Anyone who can help in this matter is asked to call police on the 101 number," Thompson added.

The Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has already been alerted about the unusual sightings.
