  • Megan Thee Stallion joined the cast of "Encanto" in their performance of "We Don't Talk About Bruno" at the 2022 Oscars
  • She added a rap verse featuring shoutouts to A-listers at the ceremony
  • "Encanto" director Jared Bush gushed over the "amazing" performance

The cast of Disney's "Encanto" had a surprise guest when they took center stage at the 2022 Oscars Sunday to perform the animated film's hit song "We Don't Talk About Bruno."

While it was Lin-Manuel Miranda's ballad "Dos Oruguitas" from "Encanto" that was nominated for the Oscar for best original song, the top-streamed Disney song "Bruno" was performed at the ceremony by the cast and a few special guests.

John Leguizamo, who voiced Bruno, introduced his Encanto "family" to the stage to perform the song. Carolina Gaintán (who voiced Pepa) opened the ensemble number alongside Mauro Castillo (Felix) before Stephanie Beatriz (Mirabel), Adassa (Dolores), Diane Guerrero (Isabela) and Rhenzy Feliz (Camilo) joined in, People reported.

Megan Thee Stallion then made a special appearance and added her own rap verse to "Bruno," including lines about the 2022 Oscars ceremony.

"Stars everywhere, I need to see Oscars, Zendaya over there," she rapped, according to E! News. "Oh no, we got three hosts. These women are the best, and they killin' all the jokes."

"Despacito" hitmaker Luis Fonsi, Becky G and percussionist Sheila E also joined the performance, Variety reported.

"Encanto" director Jared Bush later gushed over the "amazing" performance, sharing in the press room that he was just as surprised as the audience and viewers.

"I'd say they kept a lot of secrets from us," he was quoted as saying by People. "We knew there was going to be something unexpected, but I absolutely loved it. Different people have found themselves in this story. Seeing Megan Thee Stallion do it was mind-blowing."

The colorful performance also received praise from celebrities and social media users, who didn't expect Megan to rap the song.

"I guess we don’t HAVE to talk about Bruno, but can we talk about @theestallion!?! #Oscars," Kerry Washington tweeted.

"Luis Fonsi, Becky G and Megan Thee Stallion performing 'We Don't Talk About Bruno' is everything," one Twitter user wrote.

"I need the 'We Don't Talk About Bruno' remix ft. @theestallion on Spotify, Apple Music, ALL the music platforms NOOOW," the BuzzFeed Twitter account wrote.

However, the slightly edited lyrics left some of the "Encanto" faithful dismayed. For them, the original version was still the best.

"This painfully failed to replicate what makes this song so good. Why change Dolores’ verse? Why cut Camilo’s section, arguably the most iconic and replayed part of the song? Why entirely exclude the polyphonic chorus at the end?" one fan commented on YouTube.

"I’m actually really mad they didn’t just sing the song as written," another netizen wrote.

"I don't know what the #Oscars were thinking by [having] Megan Thee Stallion rap in 'We Don't Talk About Bruno.' She ruined the whole performance, and her part had nothing to do with the song," a third fan tweeted.

Miranda announced over the weekend that he would not be able to make it to the ceremony to cheer on the "Encanto" cast or pick up any possible awards because his wife tested positive for COVID-19.

“Made it to Hollywood… This weekend, my wife tested + for COVID,” he tweeted Saturday. “She’s doing fine. [The] kids and I have tested, but out of caution, I won’t be going to the Oscars tomorrow night. Cheering for my 'TickTickBoom' and 'Encanto' families [with] my own family, alongside all of you, ALL of you.”

Earlier this year, "Bruno" topped the Billboard Hot 100, becoming only the second Disney animated film song to achieve the feat after "A Whole New World" from "Aladdin."

"Encanto" also became the first movie soundtrack to reach the top of the Billboard Hot 200 since "Frozen II" in 2019, dethroning Adele's "30" after six weeks of leading the charts.
