KEY POINTS

  • Prince Harry notably traveled to Scotland sans Meghan Markle following the announcement of Queen Elizabeth's death
  • Higher powers within the royal family reportedly made the decision not to invite the former 'Suits' star
  • Harry and Meghan are expected to remain in the U.K. for the next 10 days of mourning

Meghan Markle did not get an invite to be by Queen Elizabeth's side as she was dying, which explains why Prince Harry travelled solo to Scotland, a new report claimed.

Royal expert Katie Nicholl told Entertainment Tonight that an invitation to join the royal family at Balmoral Castle was not extended to the former "Suits" actress.

"It's understood that the family wanted Prince Harry to be there, even though he was unable to get to Balmoral in time to see his grandmother," Nicholl told the news outlet.

"But Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, was not, we understand, invited to join the family. She has said she will go to Balmoral another time. But I think it is quite significant that Prince Harry traveled to Balmoral on his own without his wife," she went on.

Other sources, per TMZ, suggested that Meghan Markle opted out as a courtesy for Prince Harry. However, higher powers within the Royal Family reportedly made the decision not to invite the duchess.

Prince Harry arrived at Balmoral following the official announcement of Queen Elizabeth's death. King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla made it in time as they were already in Scotland for a number of royal engagements.

Other members of the royal family who travelled to Balmoral Castle before Her Majesty actually passed include Prince William, Prince Andrew, Prince Edward and Sophie, Countess of Wessex. Princess Anne was also believed to have made it to Scotland to say goodbye to Queen Elizabeth.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry were scheduled to attend the WellChild Awards in London. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, however, decided to cancel their appearance after an earlier announcement that Queen Elizabeth's health had taken a decline.

E! News reported that Meghan and Prince Harry would remain in the U.K. following the passing of Queen Elizabeth. While details about their extended stay were not disclosed, the Sussex pair reportedly plans to join the rest of the royal family for the next 10 days of mourning.

Meanwhile, on Friday, King Charles and Queen Consort Camilla travelled from Balmoral Castle to Buckingham Palace in London. His Majesty walked along the gates of the palace and greeted members of the public gathered outside the royal residence.
