Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are doing something rather unexpected by pulling out of their senior royal duties -- something that is receiving mixed opinions across the world. Some are showing support for the couple, citing the ever frustrating and toxic image the media is giving Markle, while others, like one major Canadian publication, can’t help but express their distaste.

The Globe and Mail had harsh words for the royal couple after news of Megxit broke out. According to them, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex can visit Canada all they like, but cannot move there due to “an unspoken constitutional taboo.” Even though Canada left the British empire over a hundred years ago, the crown still remains a part of the Canadian government, albeit a rather small one. Even so, the article claims the royal couple’s presence could complicate relationships with Queen Elizabeth II.

“This isn’t about breaking up with the Crown,” the editorial stated. “On the contrary, it’s about maintaining Canada’s unique and highly successful monarchy.”

They also report that Ottawa had agreed to pay for security costs as the royal couple arrived in their country. However, Finance Minister Bill Morneau denied these rumors and said the subject had not even been discussed.

The New York Post suggests that this Canadian newspaper isn’t the only one upset about Megxit. The Queen herself, who has acted as a sort of “crisis manager” during this controversial time, expressed a preference that Prince Harry and Markle stay put in Great Britan and fulfill their senior duties as royal officials.

Despite a supposed constitutional obligation, the Wall Street Journal reports that most Canadians actually don’t care if Markle and Prince Harry move there with 39% saying they are actually excited to have them and only 11% saying they do not want them to move to Canada. The poll also reported that 73% of Canadian residents don’t want their taxed going towards supporting the royal couple.
