Prince Harry and Meghan Markle showed profound sadness during their final royal engagement.

On Monday, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex made their final royal engagement when they joined the members of the Firm for the Commonwealth service. Prince Harry and Markle posted photos from the event on Instagram, but they didn’t mention that it was their last duty as royals.

According to The Telegraph, even if Markle appeared buoyant in public, she was actually “teary” and “devastated” during the outing. The publication noted that there was “profound sadness” when Prince Harry and Markle made their last appearance as senior members of the royal family.

“The pervading emotion on Monday, as I watched the Duchess carry out her final private engagement, seemed to be profound sadness,” journalist Bryony Gordon, who was present at the event, wrote.

“Sadness that it had come to this; sadness that they could not make it work and sadness that less than two years since that glittering fairy tale wedding, the first person of colour to join the British royal family was off. How ironic that her final engagement was to be a Commonwealth service that celebrated diversity, uniqueness, and the strength we draw from embracing each other and our differences.”

Gordon added that the departure was “bittersweet and tinged with huge sadness” for Markle’s husband, Prince Harry. When the couple attended the Mountbatten Festival of Music last Saturday, he wore his bright red mess uniform and the two medals he earned for his tours in Afghanistan. It could be Prince Harry’s final appearance as the Captain General of the Royal Marines.

According to body language expert Bianca Cobb, Prince Harry was “a little uneasy” during the ceremony. But his wife Markle was “more confident.” Royal biographer Katie Nicholl predicted that the royal family’s reunion would be bittersweet for Markle as she would feel “some trepidation.” The expert added that despite being emotional, Markle won’t show it.

Meanwhile, Prince William and Kate Middleton were slammed for allegedly snubbing Prince Harry and Markle. Royal family followers noticed that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were very cold toward the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. In fact, they barely acknowledged them.
