KEY POINTS

  • Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are likely to cancel their summer plans with Queen Elizabeth II
  • Queen Elizabeth II could stay in Windsor Castle this summer instead of having her annual break in Balmoral
  • The monarch decided to cancel Trooping the Colour

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry agreed to join Queen Elizabeth II this summer, but their reunion might be canceled.

In March, royal correspondent Roya Nikkah confirmed that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have accepted the Queen’s invitation to spend their summer with her in Balmoral. The royal couple reportedly agreed and planned to bring their son Archie with them.

However, with the so many places put on lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic, Prince Harry and Markle might not push through with their original summer plans. Yahoo! Life’s royal correspondent Rebecca Taylor said that the royal couple would have to cancel their trip to Scotland.

On Tuesday (May 12), Matt Hancock, the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, said that Britons are unlikely to fly abroad for their summer breaks. This means Queen Elizabeth II would have to stay in Windsor Castle. Also, if Prince Harry and Markle were to return to the U.K. for their summer vacation in Balmoral, they might be forced to isolate for two weeks, and this would only ruin their schedule.

It is also important to note that the global travel restrictions make it unclear when the Duke and Duchess of Sussex could return to the U.K.

Prince Harry and Markle are expected to return to the U.K. for Trooping the Colour to mark the Queen’s official birthday on June 13. However, the monarch already canceled the event, so the Duke and Duchess of Sussex no longer need to fly to the U.K. in June.

“A Buckingham Palace spokesman: ‘Her Majesty was keen that no special measures were put in place to allow gun salutes as she did not feel it appropriate in the current circumstances.’ There are currently no plans to reschedule this year’s cancelled Trooping the Colour,” Nikkhah wrote on Twitter.

Online royal expert for Hello! Danielle Stacey also shared the same opinion. For her, it’s unlikely for the Sussexes to spend their summer in the U.K. during the pandemic. Queen Elizabeth II is also not expected to travel to Balmoral.

“It seems unlikely that the Sussexes or any member of the royal family will be travelling this summer. The Queen is expected to remain at Windsor Castle for the foreseeable future and it could mean that her traditional summer break in Balmoral might not even take place this year,” Stacey wrote.
