Meghan Markle’s clothes represent so much more than just her fashion choices.

Caroline Hallemann, a journalist for Town & Country, said that Markle’s clothes actually send subtle diplomatic messages just like Princess Diana and Kate Middleton.

Last month, Markle was spotted wearing light color palettes during her public engagements. But when she traveled to Dublin, Ireland, the Duchess of Sussex was photographed in a rich forest green ensemble. The shade is symbolic of the country so Markle’s choice in the color of her dress wasn’t a coincidence.

“Meghan Markle is not only sartorially savvy and worldwide, but she’s also following in the footsteps of female members of the royal family before her, who used their wardrobes as forms of fashion diplomacy,” said Renee Kuo, a royal etiquette expert.

Kuo noted that Queen Elizabeth II has also engaged in diplomatic dressing during her international trips. In 2011, she wore a vibrant green dress when she visited Cashel, Ireland.

Princess Diana also sent out diplomatic messages when she traveled to Japan several years ago. “The late Princess of Wales had a knack for donning the right dress for any occasion, such as the white dress with red polka dots she wore during her visit to Japan in 1986, thereby modeling hundreds of mini Japanese flags,” he said.

Markle has been following on the other female royals’ footsteps, and she is expected to do so for years.

“The Duchess of Sussex is ably and fashionably continuing the Royal Family’s role as quiet yet compelling diplomats and given the political events of the past week, that is a very good thing,” Kuo said.

Meanwhile, Markle’s choices in clothing have also inspired some women to dress just like her. According to Vanity Fair, Melania Trump appeared to have taken style cues from the Duchess of Sussex when she arrived in England this week.

Donald Trump’s wife wore a cocktail dress from Roland Mouret, and she accentuated it with a red belt. Markle also wore a Roland Mouret dress during her first international trip with Prince Harry earlier this week. Prince Harry and Markle stayed in Ireland for two days.
