  • Meghan Markle's charity work was inspired by her mom Doria Ragland
  • Meghan Markle's parents raised her with social consciousness
  • Meghan Markle and Prince Harry volunteered to deliver hot meals for Project Angel Food amid the pandemic

Meghan Markle’s charity work was reportedly something her mom, Doria Ragland, taught her.

The Duchess of Sussex is known for her charity work even before she met and married Prince Harry. Long before Markle became an official member of the royal family, she has been doing many acts of charity and according to an insider, it’s because of her mother.

“Meghan didn’t have much when she was a child, but her mom made sure they always gave back,” a source told People.

Markle’s mom is a yoga instructor and a former social worker. It was reportedly Doria’s idea for Markle to volunteer for Project Angel Food, a non-profit charity that cooks, prepares and delivers hot meals to sick people.

“She said she wanted to do something to give back on Easter and was talking to her mom and her mom told her that Project Angel Food needs help and Meghan said, ‘Yes, brilliant,’” Richard Ayoub, Project Angel Food executive director, told the publication.

Markle has also recognized her mom on her lifestyle blog The Tig. In one entry, the duchess shared how her mom raised her.

“My mother raised me to be a global citizen, with eyes open to sometimes harsh realities. I must have been about 10 years old when we visited the slums of Jamaica. I had never seen poverty at that level and it registered in my glazed brown eyes. ‘Don’t look scared, Flower,’ she said. ‘Be aware, but don’t be afraid,’” Markle wrote.

The duchess admitted that both of her parents “came from little,” so they decided to give a lot. This was how Markle was brought up by her parents that’s why she grew up with social awareness.

Early this month, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were spotted delivering hot meals around Los Angeles for Project Angel Food. However, some questioned the couple’s motive after learning that the organization was actually on hiatus from accepting volunteers due to the coronavirus pandemic, yet they were still allowed to volunteer. Some even claimed that it was simply a PR stunt.

“Thank goodness they both have sunglasses but not gloves on both hands. Also, just one bag each. Wow. Really raising the bar here. PR stunt & nothing else,” @westcoastwoman7 wrote on Twitter.
