  • Melanie Lynskey said "Togetherness" was "one of the greatest joys" in her life
  • The HBO series was canceled after two seasons in 2016
  • Lynskey said she "would drop everything" to reunite with the cast for a potential revival

Melanie Lynskey still finds the cancellation of "Togetherness" difficult to accept.

Lynskey, 44, recently spoke with Us Weekly about her now-defunct comedy series "Togetherness," which aired on HBO from 2015 to 2016. She admitted that she wasn't ready to bid goodbye to the show when the network decided not to renew it after two seasons.

"Oh, my gosh. It’s one of my biggest heartbreaks. It’s hard to talk about," she told the outlet of the series' cancellation. "It’s like when you bring up a friend’s boyfriend who dumped them. It was just one of the greatest joys. I would’ve done that show forever. I would have just kept doing it forever and ever."

The HBO series also starred Amanda Peet, Steve Zissis and Mark Duplass, who co-created and co-directed the show with his brother Jay Duplass. "Togetherness" focused on marriage and friendship. Lynskey starred as Michelle Pierson, Brett's (Mark Duplass) wife.

According to Lynskey, the Duplass brothers had already written most of Season 3 before HBO decided not to pick it up for another installment. She admitted that the show's cancellation was so sudden that she wasn't ready for it.

"I wasn’t privy to what happened, why it didn’t get picked up again, but just all of a sudden it wasn’t going. And I just was like, ‘No!’ It was so great," she added.

Lynskey went on to say that she hopes to get the chance to work with Peet again, describing her former co-star as "incredible."

Peet, 49, played Tina, the sister of Lynskey's character Michelle, in the short-lived dramatic comedy. In "Togetherness" Season 2, Michelle and Brett were trying to rebuild their marriage, while Tina and Alex (Zissis) decided to finally have sex in the final scene.

The cracks in Michelle and Brett's relationship grew worse when she and her business partner, David (John Ortiz), slept together after a work conference.

According to Lynskey, she has no idea what the creators had in store for Michelle and Brett for Season 3 but thought the series was "really brave in letting the audience want both things."

"You want Michelle’s character and Brett to work it out, but then you also want Michelle and David to have this thing because the chemistry was so great. And it was so romantic in that scene," she explained. "I thought it was, you know, I read it in the script, and I was like, oh my goodness. I just swooned. I was like, this is really sexy. And I didn’t know what was coming. I think they really handled it well in the second season."

While she's not optimistic about "Togetherness" being picked up by another network or a streamer anytime soon, Lynskey said she "would drop everything" to reunite with the cast for a potential revival.

Lynskey recently starred in the supernatural comedy "Lady of the Manor" and can next be seen in Showtime's "Yellowjackets."
